The Top 10 Reasons To Become A School Psychologist

It's not like it was that long ago when I completed my School Psychology graduate program but it's actually for 16 years since then. It's been a while since I graduated and so much changes have occurred in the area of PsicologoScolastico. But, it appears that my reasons for being an educator have been the same. These are the reasons:

1.) The salary isn't all that poor. Even though we're required to finish 3 years of graduate studies, which includes a one-year work experience which is typically not paid, School Psychologists are payed fairly effectively. The salary range is thought to be around the $60 to 80K in the range of 5 to 10 years of working experience.

2.) The time off for vacation isn't too bad as well. School psychologists are typically on the 210-day contracts or similar, and don't have to work all summer long unless they are looking to make additional cash. This gives them time to spend with family members or enjoy long-term vacations during the summer.

3.) School Psychologists have been highly respected within the school environment. Despite the fact that a majority of people think that we are counselors for guidance and that very few school administrators even understand the job we perform, school psychologists appear to be with respect and are often sought out when trying to find solutions to a range of problems.

4.) School psychologists have the most autonomy at work. Most often, you'll be assigned to more than one place of work. This could be stressful because of the work load however it could be a blessing disguise as you'll be able to change from one school to another based on the requirements of each school. There isn't a lot of time in a workplace and being monitored by your boss. If you're likely to be, you need to reconsider where you work.

5) The number 4 raises another important idea. The outlook for jobs for School Psychologists is quite excellent. I don't have figures, but it appears that there are plenty of positions open to those willing to relocate around the nation. The economy has taken an ugly turn recently, I've definitely noticed an increase in the number of jobs available, but even in the midst of a recession, there are still jobs to hire school psychologists. I've discovered Schoolspring.com an excellent site to visit to find out the number of schools in search of new School Psychologists.

Six) You feel that you're helping people who require help. Yes, months and weeks pass by while you go through your paperwork to do the assessments. But every now and then you find yourself in situations where you can offer an actual assistance to people who are in need. It's always satisfying. I recommend you take the job in the regions where the economy is the most stressed and full of issues. In the end, this is where we need to be the most , and also where our work is appreciated the most by children, parents and the administrators. I work at my side of the Mexican border and would not ever change it for any other reason. In spite of the media reports that are out there, the residents and the people here are very thankful and care about their children's education often. I rarely hear of the soccer mom who is aggressive shouting at me, because her child doesn't belong to the gifted program.

7) The possibility of branching out into different fields. With the completion of a Masters in Psychology, one could instruct at the level of a community college, work on weekends at the local counseling agency and perform evaluations outside for other local districts of schools, and/or expand into education consulting. There aren't many fields in which you're qualified to perform various things.

8.) If you aren't looking to make a profit from the different methods listed in #7, school psychology, the discipline of Psychology provides a wide range of fields that you can select to become an "expert" in and apply in your daily professional activities while working as a School psychologist. There are postgraduate certificate programs in school Neuropsychology and the life coaching and behavior specialist that can be used to students in the school environment.
